Please Consider This

A campaign fund raiser has been arranged for our District 1 County Supervisor, Jack Duran.  To improve our chances  for limiting development should our golf course close, we will need political support from our elected officials.  This is an opportunity to make  your voice heard.  The fund raiser is Thursday May 31st from 6 pm to 8 pm at the home of Robyn Dahlgren & Michael Cappelluti, 8873 Creekstone Circle for wine, appetizers, and conversation with Jack Duran.

If you do decide to come, your  donations and your votes are as important as your voices.   This is a fund raising event, so please come prepared to donate.  Please make checks payable to “Friends of Jack Duran 2018” and include tax I.D. number 271281224 on your check.

Please RSVP to James Shelby at jshelby69@comcast.net by Wednesday, May 30th. If you can’t attend but would still like to donate, please drop a check by Robyn’s before the event.

  1. Look forward to meeting you all in person! Seems the decision makers all live within a block or two of you. Is John Careys house the one with all the cameras on that corner down the street? Will be at the fundraiser?

  2. I don’t believe this forum or situation is the proper place to raise funds for any politician.

  3. The fundraiser is all about securing support for saving our golf course.
This is the way the world turns – like it or not.

  4. Jim, the fundraiser is being used to fund a politician… you are asking your neighbors to contribute to someone’s campaign… it’s borderline unethical

  5. This particular fundraiser is not about Duran vs Gore, it’s about developing support to save our golf course. Plain and simple.

  6. Do we know that Bonnie Gore won’t help save our golf course? Does Jack Duran live in Morgan Creek and that is why we had this random post? If Duran is running against Bonnie sure seems like Duran vs Gore to me. 🙂

  7. Lastly, if Duran loses would he have any say so in the golf course? If that is not the case, I would suggest we have a meet and greet for both candidates so we can lobby our golf course. That would only make sense if it is about the golf course.

  8. We have no choice but to work with who is in that office right now. Charlie is moving quickly (we know for a fact he’s already met with the County) and we need to keep pace. If we have a new Supervisor come November, we would absolutely support them as well. Think of this as a fundraiser for the position (Office of the Supervisor— non party affiliated) and not for the person. Try taking your partisanship position out if the equation and look at it from a purely expedient point of view.

  9. Sad the owners/group that manages site is selective about what is posted. Disappointed. I posted several comments and they are not visible. This is not a transparent group. They only post or allow comments they want to see.

  10. IMO, this group does not appear to care about the voice of the Morgan Creek community, but instead have their own agenda, which is why they are limiting members to a “select” which I am sure nee to align with their own beliefs, whatever that may be. Just let people be people without trying to control others. Someone should start a blog for the whole community and not just “select”.

Can I join the MCHC? Our group believes we can be more effective by keeping membership small for now. However, we are willing to expand for individuals with particular skills who have the time and desire to participate. Specifically, we are looking for attorneys, lobbyists, writers, social media managers, journalists, media professionals, environmentalists and/or local elected officials. If you have any of the career experience, please use the contacts page of this blog or contact one of the individuals listed below.

    1. Contrary to what you may believe, this group does care about the voice of the community. If you believe you have special skills or are willing to ACTIVELY participate in our cause, send a note in the contact page of this blog with specifics of what you can contribute and someone will get back to you. We are not exclusive.

  11. There is no single “voice of Morgan Creek”. There are as many “voices” as there are opinions. If there were a unified voice, our task would be much easier. Since you seem unclear on our position I’ll restate it:

The MCHC is organized around 3 goals: 1) Preserve the golf course as a golf course; 2) Prohibit the golf course from any redevelopment (more housing); and 3) Demand financial transparency before paying any subsidies.

If you disagree with these goals then don’t read this blog or participate in our activities. You are free to espouse any position you like and/or start your own blog/group etc. No one is stopping you. But we are equally free to do the same, and will continue to do so with tremendous support from MC homeowners.

As for blog comments – We don’t have to allow ANY comments on our blog. But since we decided to (for now) we also reserve the right to not post them if we deem them to be excessively pejorative, hostile or ones that single out individuals in a derogatory manner. So far we have only cut ONE comment out more than 100 posted. Bottom line is if you don’t play nice (be civil) we reserve the right to block you. Again, if you don’t our positions or our rules you are free go somewhere else. Also, serial complainers will most likely be blocked, simply because they’re annoying and none of us has the time or the patience to indulge that kind of nonsense.

    1. My only issue is that you are naming yourself the “Morgan Creek Coalition” and stating things like you’re the community’s “one voice” I have problem with that when you clearly state only a “select” can join your “club”. Therefore, you are not “one voice” and should rename yourself as you represent 10% or less of the community since you are intentionally excluding 90%. That is not “one voice” nor should be named Morgan Creek Coalition which implies you represent all. I have no issue if you want a small select group, just don’t say things like “one voice” and you really should rename your Coalition to something else aside from Morgan Creek. Most coalitions want as many people as possible joining their “cause” You clearly state you don’t want that, only certain elite like attorneys, journalists etc. You should consider this. Not trying to cause problems, just pointing that glaring fact out.

      1. We never claimed to be speaking for, or representing all Morgan Creek residents and we never said we’re speaking with “one voice” (I don’t know where you got this notion). As for our name (MCHC), check the word “coalition” in the dictionary, it fits us perfectly. And yes, we’re looking for people with special skills, if you have a special skill that would advance our cause please reach out if you’re interested in joining us. The larger the number of people the more difficult it is to set meeting dates, find meeting locations and make decisions. That’s why, for now, we’ve decided to keep the group small. You are free to start your own group, name it whatever you want, take on whatever issue you’re passionate about and include whomever you choose, just like we did.

  12. @Rose. We disagree, hence the fundraiser. See Civics 101 blog post for clarification.

  13. Thank you rob d and all of those people who is really doing something to help the community. Heartfelt thanks. Some may view this as your agenda but I truly believe you are there for the goods of our community.

  14. I suggest doing a meet and greet for Bonnie Gore too. I’m not saying this for policial reasons at all. Gore appears to have a very large support system and following from what I’ve seen. Wouldn’t our community want to support the candidate who has the masses support? Again, not trying to make this political at all. Just a thought.

  15. @Linsay – that is definitely an option. Would you be willing to organize/host an event? We’d be happy to advertise it here on the blog.

  16. Yes I would help organize an event with others from the neighborhood but I would prefer to have the event somewhere other than my house.

  17. Sounds great. Please let me know when/where and we’d be happy to attend and announce it here on the blog — It takes a village.

  18. This event is not about the Duran vs Gore election. This event is to gain the support of the sitting Supervisor for our effort to save the golf course. If Bonnie Gore wins the election, we definitely need to have a similar event with her to gain her support for our cause. However, that will not be until September and we need the Supervisor’s support now.

  19. May I ask what is being done by the HOA Board and the management company? Surely your Board is working on this issue with Me Gibson? Thank you for any information you can give us as potential buyers!

    1. @Potential Buyers – The Board is no longer in discussions with Mr. Gibson as he has withdrawn his subsidy proposal. However, that doesn’t mean he won’t go through with his redevelopment plans or sell or close the golf course. Since the golf course is privately owned, Mr. Gibson does not have to confer with the HOA or get their approval.

  20. Neighborhood rumors are rampant that is for sure. What is most commonly said is John Carey and the Board have run Mr Gibson out of the neighborhood and there is no genuine intent, by either party, to negotiate in good faith. I do agree with the opinions that we need financial transparency to subsidize via the HOA but regardless it appears Mr Gibson and Mr Carey will never work together again. I am of the opinion the current ownership group will do what any good business does, which is maximize return on their investment. I don’t see selling to another operator as their best exit option, selling to a developer probably is. Mr Carey may leave his post with the distinct legacy of installing gates while eliminating the golf course. Someone said it on here, it is politics and that said most politicians understand their position of power, or lack-thereof. Good to see neighbors jumping in since the HOA has failed in my opinion but my concern now is it is too late, and you can’t strong arm the other party when they hold all the cards.

  21. As I see it regarding this issue:

Our volunteer Board has their community oversight role which they are executing under advice of their attorneys governed by state Association laws dictating what they can and cannot do. The MCHC has their advocacy role which is being executed, in cooperation with the Board to the extent possible, on behalf of the betterment of the community. The community has their role of providing informed input and feedback to both groups to offer a balanced perspective. As far as I can tell, it all seems to be working well to me. Just don’t get the roles confused – they are different and separate from each other.

    1. I’d like to see a few examples of what the Board and our HOA President have done to better the community. I seriously question the intent and judgment when it comes to Mr Carey.

  22. Phil, Mr. Carey is up for re-election in January. You and the community have an opportunity at that time to re-elect him or not. You also have the opportunity to run for his seat if you feel you can do better. Try it – you just might find that these volunteer positions are much more difficult and time consuming than you might think. Oh, and they don’t pay so well either.

And BTW, this blog is about more than the golf course. See previous posts on the gates, etc. It was intended to cover all matters of interest to the Morgan Creek Community – the golf course just happens to be the most pressing issue at this time.

    1. Fair points Jim, thank you. I don’t need the money and the time commitment by anyone that volunteers is much appreciated. I have very little time to offer and respect those that share their own valuable time.

The golf course is the biggest issue this community will ever face in my opinion. The Board and our HOA President, again in my opinion, should have been well ahead of this and from my view looks like a desperate scramble that I believe to be far too late. In fact, it appears Board/HOA leadership are not the ones who even escalated this issue to the community.

My opinion is Mr Carey shared information with residents he socializes with in some fashion, and they are the ones who put on their activist hats and got to work when they realized the severity of the impact for doing nothing.

Not everyone has or wants a golf lifestyle, buy many of us bought here primarily for that reason. Frankly I would not forecast long term downside risk on property values in Morgan Creek without the golf course so putting another asset into a property management portfolio is likely the outcome for my family.

We will be deciding in short order if we will rent out our property or list it for sale. You can either wait for things to happen to you, or go make it happen yourself. Most folks I know in this community fall in the latter and candidly it appears Mr Gibson and the ownership group do too.

      See y’all tonight.
